41-5 ABSTRACT
Most of the cartographic work in Japan is carried out under the Survey Law. Main objectives of this law are to coordinate various survey work efficientlty, to standardize accuracy and to avoid overlapping work. Survey work is classified into two categories by the law. The first one is the Fundamental Survey executed by the Geographical Survey Institute (GSI) nationwide, and the other is the Public Survey for local governmental projects or special projects which are carried out by other governmental or public organizations such as the Forestry Agency, the Geological Survey of Japan (GSJ), the National Land Agency (NLA), etc. Preparation of various kinds of hydrographic charts is carried out by the Hydrographic Department (HD), the Maritime Safety Agency. |
