Vol.41-3 ABSTRACT
A dense and wide permanent GPS station network has been established in the Southern Kanto and Tokai areas by the Crustal Dynamics Department. The total system is named COSMOS-G2 (COntinuous Strain MOnitoring System with GPS by GSI) and it is expected to contribute to detect precursors of large earthquakes which are supposed to occur in and around these areas. It is also expected to expand our knowledge in various fields of geophysics and geodesy. COSMOS-G2 network consists of about 110 permanent stations. Average spacing between the stations is 10~15 km. Continuous observation with such a dense and large network may be the first trial in the world. COSMOS-G2 control system is designed for fully automatic operation. Almost all functions can be carried out without manual operations. Precision of several millimeters in horizontal and several centimeters in vertical has already been achieved. Further reinforcement of the network and improvement of the precision is being investigated. |
