Volcano Maps

The Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI) has been developing the Volcanic Base Map (VBM) and the Land Condition Map of Volcano (VLCM) with the aim of reducing damage caused by volcanic disasters and providing basic information for local disaster prevention plans in the region.

VBM is a base map that precisely represents the volcanic topography using contour lines. Additionally, volcanic disaster prevention facilities are overlaid on the map. This map contributes to the formulation of regional disaster prevention plans, emergency response strategies and ongoing volcanic research.
VLCM comprehensively depicts topography formed by past volcanic activities. It represents the distribution of ejecta and landforms resulting from erosion caused by wind, rain, and water flow. Moreover, it is utilized in predicting volcanic disasters and developing strategies for disaster prevention. This map is expected to be used as basic data in various scenarios, including other kinds of disaster prevention, environmental investigations, education and other purposes.
