Towards the launch of Urban Hazard Maps Web Portal that enables to understand the development of hazard maps of major cities in the world

- The importance of the development, update and use of risk information including hazard maps has been confirmed at the 3rd UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction -

The Geospatial Information Authority of Japan and the International Steering Committee for Global Mapping (ISCGM), who designed Urban Hazard Maps Web Portal site that enables to understand the development of urban hazard maps of major cities in the world, announced their intention to contribute to the promotion of hazard map development and received approval at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.

1. Confirming the importance of hazard map development at the 3rd UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (Sendai , Japan, March 14 to 18, 2015)

On March 18 2015, the 3rd UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction adopted the "Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030", which emphasizes the importance of developing, updating and disseminating risk information such as hazard maps by using geospatial information technology.
In conjunction with the discussions for the "Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030," the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan and the International Steering Committee for Global Mapping (ISCGM) proposed at the conference's working session on Earth Observation and High Technology to Reduce Risks that ISCGM build a hazard map portal site that enables to understand the development of hazard maps of major cities in the world. This proposal gained a strong support from the participants of the working session.

2. Holding the Symposium on Application of Geospatial Technology in Urban Disaster Management (March 13, 2015)

Geospatial Information Authority of Japan and ISCGM co-organized the Symposium on Application of Geospatial Technology in Urban Disaster Management, as a pre-event of the 3rd UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction. The Symposium participants, who are mainly experts in urban disaster information and geospatial information, reaffirmed the importance of developing, sharing and using urban area hazard maps, and furthermore, that the ISCGM portal site mentioned above would be effective for realizing the "Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030" to push these initiatives forward. It was thereby agreed upon advancing the work for the launch of the site.
